Is Austria good for summer holidays?
If you enjoy walking, hiking, biking, swimming, and relaxing, then summer holidays in the Austrian Alps are the perfect choice! With plenty to see and do, as well as excellent wellness and relaxation options, Austria offers the ideal summer trip, no matter your plans.
In summer, the Austrian mountains transform into a hub for outdoor activities, featuring hundreds of kilometres ofbike trails, hiking routes, and more.
Visit Seefeld, Zell am See, or Kaprun for lakeside lounging and paddleboarding, or take a trip to Alpbach, Niederau, or Oberau in the Tyrolean Alps for numerous family-friendly adventures, including high ropes courses and summer toboggans. Scream if you want to go faster!
What month is best to visit Austria?
For summer Austrian Alps holidays, the best months to visit depend on what you’re after. If you’re seeking long, warm summer days by the lake with kids in tow, then summer holidays in June, July, and August provide the warmest temperatures of the year, perfect for leisurely strolls, bike rides, and swims.
If you wish to avoid the crowds and pack in some seriously active days of hiking, biking, and exploring, then consider a holiday in late spring or autumn. May, September, and October still offer warm temperatures with the added bonus of fewer people and better deals on accommodation and flights. A win-win!
How hot is Austria in summer?
In the mountains, the Alps typically experience average temperatures of around 21-22°C in June, July, and August, with July being the hottest month.
In spring, temperatures in May and autumn in September and October range from 15-18°C.
Is there still snow in Austria in summer?
Typically, all the snow from the ski season lasts until June, and the first winter snowfall can fall as early as September.
Is Austria expensive in summer?
Although travelling during peak times, such as the August school summer holidays, can lead to increased costs for flights and accommodation, there are still plenty of simple ways to secure a cheap Austria summer holiday.
Consider taking vacations in May and June, or September and October, to find great deals on hotels, flights, and activities while also avoiding the crowds. Alternatively, if you are tied to the August bank holiday, consider exploring hidden gems such as Alpbach, Ellmau, and Niederau-Wildschönau. These resorts still provide plenty of family fun, with the added benefits of lower costs and smaller crowds. Win-win!
How many days in Austria are enough?
Although there is plenty to keep you entertained for weeks or more in the Austrian Alps—including hundreds of kilometres of hiking trails and cycling routes—short transfers and flights make this a fantastic destination for summer holiday weekends and short breaks if you're pressed for time.
We recommend a weekend or short break in Seefeld. With quick flights from several UK destinations and just a 20-30 minute transfer from Innsbruck airport, this is a fabulous choice for hiking, cycling, and lakeside relaxing for those short on time yet still wanting their mountain fix.
What to wear in Austria in summer?
Heading to the mountains this summer? Although you’ll undoubtedly want all your summer favourites - think shorts, shirts, t-shirts, and dresses - remember that the higher up the hills you go, the cooler it gets!
Consider packing athletic tops and shorts, a lightweight fleece, and a light waterproof jacket to ensure you’re safe and prepared for whatever the conditions may be while hiking, biking, and exploring the mountains.
Also, remember to come equipped with hiking boots or trail shoes for uneven ground, as well as a good pair of sandals for when you head lakeside.
What are the entry requirements for Austria?
Entry requirements are completely dependent on your nationality. Things can change, so for the most up-to-date visa and passport information, we advise checking the international travel advice for your nationality, below are two examples.
