A hidden gem in the wonderous Triglav National Park
Much quieter than its famous counterpart to the east (Lake Bled), but Lake Bohinj has just as much to offer. The lake lies in the magnificent Bohinj valley within Triglav National Park, with the Julian Alps providing an epic backdrop. Its enticing waters are chilly but, on a hot summer day, that can be exactly what you need to cool down. The little villages that surround the lake emanate alpine charm, while the hiking and biking trails of the national park reveal the natural beauty of the region.
6 reasons we think you’ll love Lake Bohinj
Wild waterfalls
Exploring the marvels of Triglav National Park is essential when staying at Lake Bohinj. If you only manage one hike, make it the Savica waterfall forest trail. Standing at 78 metres, this natural wonder is one of Slovenia’s most impressive.
High-altitude views
Escape the summer heat and ride the cable car to Mount Vogel. The journey only takes 4 minutes and the views are simply stunning. You’ll also find some great hiking trails, a mountain-bike park, and a 300m zipline.
Church of St John the Baptist
Icon of Lake Bohinj, this picturesque church sits at the far eastern shore. It bears over 700 years of history, and contains mysterious gothic illustrations that have caused much debate, including angels with bared teeth and white devils.
Exploring by bike
It’s easy to check out the local area by bike, thanks to the Bohinj cycle path. This well-signed asphalt route leads you from the upper valley to the lower valley via the lake, and reveals many local beauty spots.
Paddle power
Kayaking and canoeing are top activities on the lake. But if you fancy something a little more challenging, look no further than a guided kayak trip on the Sava Bohinjka River, where easy-going currents make for a relaxing experience.
An iconic mountain
Triglav is Slovenia’s highest mountain and its national symbol. It takes 2-days to trek Triglav, which includes some via ferrata, so guided excursions are the best way to go. Summit views and sense of achievement make this a popular challenge.
