Are the French Alps a great destination for a summer holiday?
Perfect for families, couples, and groups, whether you’re after a forest ramble, an e-bike glacier tour, or dramatic downhill MTB descents, the summer in the French Alps has you covered!
What is the best month to travel to France?
To soak up the sun, holidays to the French Alps in summer in June, July, and August see average highs reach up to 20-22°C. It's perfect for a lakeside dip or a cool glass of wine on a sunny terrace!
However, if you’re looking to pack in plenty of long days spent hiking and cycling, we recommend checking out spring and autumn holidays in May, September, and October. With average high temperatures in Morzine and Chamonix reaching around 16-18°C, it’s ideal for avoiding both the heat and the crowds. And if that wasn’t enough, these times of year offer fantastic out-of-season deals on flights and accommodation. A win-win!

Can you swim in Chamonix and Morzine?
Yes, you can! In addition to hikes to and around beautiful natural lakes, Chamonix itself is home to great pools and lidos ideal for a post-hike dip!
In Morzine, the Aquatic Centre offers a variety of pools for both children and adults, including flumes and wellness areas, alongside Nyon Guérin and Montriond Lake, which provide opportunities for kayaking and paddleboarding.
What should you wear in summer in the French Alps?
When hiking and walking in the French Alps, it’s essential to stay covered and safe. We recommend athletic tops, leggings, shorts, and a lightweight fleece, as well as a waterproof jacket and a good pair of hiking boots or trail shoes to ensure you’re prepared for any conditions. It’s also a good idea to pack a hat, sunglasses, neckwear, and, of course, sunscreen, along with a water bottle.
Then, when it comes to afternoons spent hunting down the best fondue and raclette spots, feel free to whip out those all-important dresses and shirts!
