Epic alpine town for high adventure and relaxation
Tucked into the upper Zillertal valley, Mayrhofen is something of an alpine institution. This lively town has quite the party reputation during the ski season, but once the summer sun comes out things get much more laid-back. The town serves as a gateway to four beautiful subsidiary valleys, which opens up gigantic hiking opportunities. Many cable cars take bikes too, which means all you have to worry about is the downhill part. And if you don’t want to plan your own route or can’t decide which trail to start with, then check out the many guided hikes and bike rides.
6 reasons we think you’ll love summer in Mayrhofen
Icy experiences
3,000 metres up, the view from Hintertux Glacier is stunning. Not only is there year-round skiing, but also snowcat tours, and an incredible ice cave beneath the pistes. You can even take a boat tour on the glacier lake.
Bird’s-eye view
Travel up to the Ahorn mountain straight from town on Austria’s largest cable car, which reveals gorgeous views over the Zillertal valley. Once at the top, it's a great spot for lunch, there are also regular bird of prey displays.
Via ferrata
Fancy climbing the face of a concrete dam? Put your nerves to the test at Schlegeis 131 Via Ferrata, where you scale the 131-metre dam on a specially constructed course. And if you love that, try the 600-metre zipline next.
Mountain dining
One of the many highlights of hiking and biking in the Zillertal Valley is stopping for lunch at a mountain hut or refuge. Think - local produce, freshly baked breads, ice cold local beer, and usually an incredible view too.
Cool off in the pool
The outdoor pool in Mayrhofen is the place to be when you just want to enjoy the sun. The kids pool has plenty of jets and slides to keep water babies entertained, and lots of soft grassy areas for sunbathing.
Rafting & canyoning
Swap your hiking boots for a wetsuit and get ready for an adventure as you discover the white waters of the Ziller River. With family-friendly routes, and more challenging options available, a rafting session is a thrilling holiday experience.
